Thousands of years ago the world as we know it was destroyed by what the book of Revelations prophesied as the second coming. Christianity wasn't the only religion though, bits and pieces of all religions (except Mormonism and Scientology) were real.
When the world was destroyed, a lone island survived because it was under the protection of a goddess looking after the Nephilim, whose descendants now identify as the witches and warlocks of Pantook Mountain. The Nephilim had never been on good terms with humans and kept their distance. Knowing their divine origins gave them a sense of superiority, but they also feared for their lives after all the persecution they had endured.
Having been cursed by the christian god to a lifespan never exceeding 120 years old, and with their difficulty to conceive and carry babies to term, their numbers dwindled. Eventually, they began kidnapping humans for procreation. Sometimes, the women escaped, and fearing discovery, they eventually ceased those practices. The natural fertility of humans helped swell their numbers again, but thinned the divinity of their blood. Some magics persisted though and were even passed onto the humans through the pregnant women who left. After a few thousand years, everyone has at least a little divine blood, humans less than the witches, but enough that some are able to tap into the magics quite easily.
The witches are still aware of their origins, but the humans no longer remember a time when religion existed and have no concept of theology. Feeling confident that the humans had forgotten everything, the queens sent out two scouts, members of the royal family, to see what could be learned from them. The sisters took positions at Sator Academy for the Magical Arts and have surprised their fellow witches with what they have discovered. The queens have begun allowing a few of their children to be trained at Sator and accepted a truce with the chancellor of the Coalition. Many witches have been put off by his arrogance, but the queens remain curious.
The Coalition has passed its peak and like any civilization, corruption has crept in. The gap between rich and poor widened. Those with great wealth invariably lived in Union City, and all other areas had just enough to survive, if they had that much. Discontent stirred, and some got the idea that a change in government was needed...
